Organic Facts

Did you know it has been reported that...
- Many fruit and vegetables contain a cocktail of pesticides.
- Some chemicals can remain in our bodies for many years.
- Up to 500 chemicals are routinely used in conventional farming.
- It takes three years for a farm to convert to organic.
- Traces of banned chemicals have been found in imported food.
- Antibiotics used on animals can be
absorbed when you eat the meat.
What is Organic?
Organic refers to the way agricultural
products- food and fiber- are grown and processed. It is an ecological
system that at its core relies on a healthy rich soil to produce strong
plants that resist pests and diseases.
Organic farming prohibits
the use of toxic and persistent chemicals in favour of more
“earth-friendly” practices that work in harmony with nature. In the case
of livestock, antibiotics are prohibited, opting instead for preventative
measures for keeping animals healthy and productive. Organic production
also prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms
(GMO’s).
10 reasons why to eat
organic:
1. Avoids pesticides
Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming
and residues are often present in non-organic food. High
levels of pesticide residues can be found in
baby food, spinach, dried fruit, bread, apples, celery, and broccoli.
2. No nasty additives
Organic food doesn't contain food additives which can cause health
problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.
3.It's healthy
On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential
minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as
cancer-fighting antioxidants.
4. No Genetically modified (GM)

5. Reliance on drugs removed
If you
eat dairy or meat products, going organic has never been more essential to
safeguard you and your family's health. Intensively-reared dairy cows and
farm animals are fed a dangerous cocktail of antibiotics, hormones,
anti-parasite drugs and many other medicines on a daily basis, whether
they have an illness or not. These drugs are passed directly onto the
consumers of their dairy produce or meat., which must be a contributing
factor to meat-related diseases like coronaries and high blood pressure.
6. No hidden costs
Organic
food is not really more expensive than intensively farmed foods, as we pay
for conventional foods through our taxes. We spend billion of dollars
every year cleaning up the mess that agro-chemicals make to our natural
water supply.
7. High standards
Organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food
companies are inspected at least once a year. The standards for organic
food are laid down in law.
8. Care for animals
Animal welfare is taken very seriously under organic standards. The
benefits of the organic approach are acknowledged by animal welfare
organisations.
9. Good for wildlife and the environment
It is better for wildlife, causes lower
pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide - the main global
warming gas - and less dangerous wastes.
10. Top for taste
Organic
produce simply tastes so much better. Fruit and vegetables full of juice
and flavour, and so many different varieties to try! A
number of top chefs choose organic.
What is
Genetic Modification?
The techniques of
modern genetics have made possible the direct manipulation of the
genetic makeup of organisms. In agriculture, genetic engineering
allows simple genetic traits to be transferred to crop plants from
wild relatives, other distantly related plants, or virtually any
other organism.
Recombinant DNA
technology thus has brought a new precision to the process of crop
development, which traditionally selects desired traits through
crosses between crops and their wild relatives (a laborious and
relatively imprecise method).
Genetic modification
can be used in many ways to control a variety of traits of plants,
and the consequences of one manipulation may be completely
different from another based on the traits modified.
What Are the Benefits?
Genetically modified foods (GM foods or GMF) offer a way to
quickly improve crop characteristics such as yield, pest
resistance, or herbicide tolerance, often to a degree not possible
with traditional methods. Further, GM crops can be manipulated to
produce completely artificial substances, from the precursors to
plastics to consumable vaccines.
What are the Risks?
The power of genetic modification techniques raises the
possibility of human health, environmental, and economic problems,
including unanticipated allergic responses to novel substances in
foods, the spread of pest resistance or herbicide tolerance to
wild plants, inadvertent toxicity to benign wildlife, and
increasing control of agriculture by biotechnology corporations

What does "Certified Organic" mean?
"Certified Organic" means the item has
been grown according to strict uniform standards that are verified
by independent state or private organizations. Certification
includes inspections of farm fields and processing facilities,
detailed record keeping, and periodic testing of soil and water to
ensure that growers and handlers are meeting the standards which
have been set.
